Q. Can I have Our Computer Tech build my web site and then do the maintenance myself?

A. Yes. It's your site and you are free to make any changes to it you like. However, you need to be comfortable using your computer for tasks beyond email and word processing and you need to be familiar with the technology used to build your site. If you have any doubts about your technical experience in the area of web site construction it's probably best to let Our Computer Tech take care of the maintenance for you.

Q. When I set up my account with you, I asked you to set it so that mail sent to my domain is forwarded to another email account. The problem is that people told me they sent me mail, but I never got it. What is the problem?

A. If the other account has SPAM filtering, it may be deleting the messages. Some SPAM filters will delete or block messages if the original address the message was sent to is different from the mail account that the message is being delivered to. Please adjust your SPAM filter settings or talk to your ISP if they are doing the filtering and have them adjust the filters.

Q. I am having trouble setting up my Outlook Express so that I can use my email account with my own domain.
A. Please click here for help setting up your email. This will open a PDF file with step-by-step instructions for setting up your email. If you still have trouble after following the steps listed here, then please let us know and we'll take a look.

Q. I am trying to FTP into my user directory using my browser and I get a 'Login incorrect' error.

A. It may be your browser. For example: Netscape 6.1 automatically tries to FTP in as an anonymous user. For security reasons, our server does not support anonymous user login. Unfortunately Netscape 6.1 does not give you the option of logging in with your user name and password. Internet Explorer versions 5.5, 6.x, 7 and FireFox 2.0 do. Try a different browser or check your browser's FTP settings. If you still have trouble, let us know.

Q. I have changed the IP addresses at my domain name registrar, but their site still comes up when I try to go to my new site. Why isn't it going to my site?

A. Although the DNS servers propagate fairly quickly, it can take 24 hours or more for the internet to fully update with your new address. Be patient. If it still doesn't work after 24 hours, let us know.

Q. Does Our Computer Tech support Frontpage extensions?

A. OCT Managed Hosting does not support Frontpage extensions. There is some question as to how secure they are to use and the source code is not available for review to check security issues. But, this does not mean that you cannot use Frontpage to design your site. You can. Just do not include any of the special extensions. In addition, the functions that are performed by the extensions can be performed in either PHP or Perl and there are many sites on the internet with free PHP and Perl scripts. If you wish to use FrontPage extensions consider OCT Self-Service Hosting.

Q. I want to get new customers, but I don't want to SPAM people. Should I use one of those CD offers where I can buy addresses of people that want to receive e-mail advertising?

A. We strongly recommend against it. The CD and list offers you get are often SPAM themselves and the addresses are usually gathered from usenet postings, whois information, and scanning web sites for addresses.
